Gratitude Benefit: Energy

Gratitude shifts our focus to the present moment. Adela Rubio, a “deep dive mentor,” states, “Even though the actions, or experiences you might feel grateful for occurred in the past, the energy of gratitude, focuses in the present moment. The present moment is where everything IS! It connects you to what’s true, to the dynamic aliveness of right now… the best place to BE!”

Abraham Maslow stated that, "The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness."

Gratitude helps us stay in the present and, therefore, be healthier mentally and have more energy for the things we want to do in life.

Gratitude Benefit: Success

Gratitude leads to abundance thinking which leads to success.

Dr. Joseph Mercola states, “Science tells us that people who are thankful for what they have are happier and reach their goals with greater ease.

“Your future health and happiness depends largely on the thoughts you think today. So each moment of every day is an opportunity to turn your thinking around, thereby helping or hindering your ability to think and feel more positively in the very next moment. Starting and/or ending each day by thinking of something you're grateful for is one way to keep your mind on the right track.”

Daily Gratitudes: Attention

Day 25/365, 2016: I am grateful for the cycle of life that is beautiful in birth and in death, in ascendance and decline.

This image was prompted by the quote of poet Jane Hirshfield, "Zen pretty much comes down to three things: everything changes, everything is connected, pay attention."

I like simple things I can remember, and particularly commands that you instantly understand but can take a lifetime to master. It seems appropriate to pay a little more attention to "attention." So a few more quotes.

"When you approach something to photograph it,
first be still with yourself
until the object of your attention affirms your presence.
Then don't leave until you have captured its essence."
  -- Minor White

"I think the one lesson I have learned is
that there is no substitute for paying attention."
 -- Diane Sawyer

"The only factor becoming scarce in a world of abundance
is human attention."
-- Kevin Kelly, editor "Wired"

"There is a spiritual basis to attention,
a humility in waiting upon the emergence
of pattern from experience."
-- Mary Catherine Bateson, from Peripheral Vision
"Love begins with paying attention to others,
with an act of gracious self-forgetting."
-- John O'Donohue, Anam Cara

Gratitude Benefit: Health & Fitness

Studies have shown that people who regularly practice feeling thankful have a leg up when it comes to their health. Robert Emmons, a psychology professor at the University of California at Davis, has been a leading researcher in this growing field, termed “positive psychology.” His research has found that those who adopt an “attitude of gratitude” as a permanent state of mind experience many health benefits.

Deepak Chopra says, "Experiencing gratitude is one of the most effective ways of getting in touch with your soul. When you’re in touch with your soul, you eavesdrop on the thoughts of the universe. You feel connected to everything in creation. You embrace the wisdom of uncertainty and you sense yourself as a field of infinite possibilities."

Whether you consider gratitude a practical practice or a spiritual practice, studies show that it affects almost every aspect of your being.

Gratitude Benefit: Better Relationships

A new study shows that feelings of gratitude were the most consistent predictor of marital quality among couples of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Couples who are more grateful for one another report being closer, more committed, and having greater mutual relationship satisfaction.

Maria Hillel says that the benefits of greater gratitude within relationships include:
“You can more easily accept others and yourself. We are all imperfect people seeking the best possible life. There is no reason not to be friends.
“You no longer take anything personally. Life presents difficult challenges for everyone; it’s not just about you.”

Saunter into the world

Suggestion from Gratitude Miracles journal*, Cycle 8: Peace & Contentment:

Mick Ukleja at LeadershipTraq.com suggests that you "Saunter into your day.  The word saunter comes from the Middle Ages. Everything was considered sainted, including the earth - St. Terre. Therefore, to saunter is to walk on the earth with reverence for its holiness."

Take time to enter your day slowly and with reverence.

Gratitude Benefit: Happiness

University of California at Davis researcher  Robert Emmons, Ph.D., states, “The best way to reap the benefits of gratitude is to notice new things you’re grateful for every day. Gratitude journaling works because it slowly changes the way we perceive situations by adjusting what we focus on. While you might always be thankful for your great family, just writing ‘I’m grateful for my family’ week after week doesn’t keep your brain on alert for fresh grateful moments.

“Opening your eyes to more of the world around you can deeply enhance your gratitude practice. Make a game out of noticing new things each day.

“Our relationships with others are the greatest determinant of our happiness. So it makes sense to think of other people as we build our gratitude.”

Emmons suggests that focusing our gratitude on people for whom we’re thankful rather than circumstances or material items will enhance the benefits we experience. And while you’re at it, why not include others directly into your expression of gratitude? One Happify.com activity involves writing a gratitude letter to someone who had an impact on you whom you’ve never properly thanked.
